Why did Saint Francis Xavier embark on his awesome journey?
Saint Francis Xavier and his six companions wanted to share and spread the gospel. They devoted their lives to the service of God, and decided that they would take vows of chastity and poverty, and then make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. This was an important step in the foundation of Jesus.
Saint Francis travelled mainly to India, Malacca, Amboina and Ternate, Japan and China. His main reason for travel was to restore Christianity to the Portuguese settlers in those countries as many of them had lost their faith through bad vices and habits. His goal was to teach the principles of faith and he spent most of his time teaching children. In his travels he built almost 40 churches.
