How He Died
Saint Francis was focused on missionary work in China. He travelled to an island near Canton called Shangchuan, but couldn't travel to the mainland because the borders were closed to foreigners. While he was waiting for a ship to take him to the mainland, he developed a fever. Saint Francis asked his friend if he thought he should still travel, and his friend confirmed that it would still be a good idea to board the ship once it came. Saint Francis would not eat or drink anything and the rough seas just made his fever worse.
He was taken to a straw hut by his friend Antonio, who cared for him, but unfortunately he could do no more for him, and he died jusat before dawn on Saturday December 3 1552, at the age of 46. The last words he spoke as he died were: "In thee, O Lord, have I hoped; let me never be confounded".
